On Wednesday, the Assam government banned the sale, manufacture, storage, distribution, transportation and display of gutkha, pan masala and chewing materials containing tobacco and nicotine, as reported on November 22.
Under Clause (A) of Sub-Section 2 of Section 30 of the Food Safety & Security Act, 2006, the state government imposed the ban for a period of one year.
According to the official notification issued by the Assam government's Food Safety Commissioner, Dr. Chandrima Baruah, the ban was made under the 2011 Food Safety & Standards Act Regulations of 2, 3 and 4 of the Food Safety & Standards Regulations.
This is the second time that the Assam administration has banned tobacco and nicotine-containing products in the state for a period of one year, following the danger that many people have lost their lives consuming tobacco.
