Guwahati – Heavy protests against the infamous Citizenship (Amendment) Bill (CAB) rocked the gateway to the Northeast on Thursday.
Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) led the campaign for CAB Protest.
Thousands of protestors took to the streets at Dispur demanding scrapping of the controversial CAB.
Addressing the protestors, peasant leader Akhil Gogoi said, “If CAB is not scrapped, people of the State will overthrow the Sarbananda Sonowal government in 2021.”
He also said that if the CAB is passed in Parliament, then the state's people are willing to oust Assam's BJP and RSS.
He also said that at the expense of voting bank politics, the BJP compromised the feelings of the state's people.
The protesters shouted slogans denouncing Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Amit Shah, and union home minister, and Sarbananda Sonowal, head of government.
On Wednesday, the Union Cabinet gave its nod to the 2019 Citizenship (Amendment) Bill aimed at providing Indian nationality to Hindus, Christians, Sikhs, Parsis, Jains, and Buddhists fleeing persecution from Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh.
