Assam celebrates 71st Death Anniversary of First Assam CM, Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi

On Wednesday, Assam commemorates the 71st death anniversary of Gopinath Bordoloi, the state's first Chief Minister.

Assam's current Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, paid respect for Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi, an Assamese icon.

“Assam would be forever grateful to Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi for safeguarding the state's identity during the Grouping exercise. On the fifth anniversary of Lokpriya's death, August 5, we will commemorate Karmachari Diwas in his memory. Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma tweeted, "Paying homage to the noble son of the soil."

Assam Chief Minister Sarma remarked on Gopinath Bordoloi's works and spirit during a programme. He claimed that if the state's generation heeds Bordoloi's remarks, the state will improve.

“Offered floral tribute at Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi Samadhi Khetra, Guwahati today, on the occasion of his death anniversary with @RGoswami87,” tweeted President of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee, Bhupen Kumar Borah.

Assam Chief Minister Sarma further stated that students will be required to learn more about Gopinath Bordoloi. For the upper secondary parts, a full-fledged textbook will be developed. The biography will include Lokopriya Gopinath Bordoloi's whole life and contributions.

Gopinath Bordoloi died on August 5, 1950, after being born on June 10, 1890. He was the first Chief Minister of Assam and a politician and Indian freedom activist.

He believed in Gandhi's idea of non-violence as a political tool. The then-Governor of Assam, Jayram Das Doulatram, bestowed upon him the title "Lokpriya," which means "loved by all," in recognition of his selfless contribution to Assam and its people.

He was a driving factor behind the establishment of Gauhati University, the Assam High Court, and the Assam Medical College, among other institutions. He was a brilliant writer as well. His efforts, particularly in Assam, will be remembered for years.
