Mirabai Chanu's Olympic dream may be dashed by a new IOC directive - weightlifting may lose Olympic status

Mirabai Chanu, a Tokyo Olympic silver medalist, is celebrating her 27th birthday today, an occasion that gives her both joy and grief. According to the Olympic Association, the sport of weightlifting, which has brought Chanu international acclaim, is on the verge of losing its Olympic status.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) stated as the basis for the decision that the charter revisions could end the sport of weightlifting, which has a long history with the Olympic Games. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) Session today overwhelmingly endorsed the decision to eliminate weightlifting. The judgement could put an end to Mirabai Chanu's and other weightlifters' Olympic dreams in Paris in 2024.

Weightlifting, according to the IOC, is most at risk of being dropped from the Paris Olympics due to repeated drug charges and governance difficulties. Following a succession of doping and corruption scandals, the IOC has regularly reminded the IWF about the need for reform in the last year.

Weightlifting is under constant threat of being dropped from the Olympic Games following the Charter amendments in Paris 2024, but it may be granted a chance to return at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.

The IOC membership today approved a proposal to the Executive Board that gives it the authority to suspend Olympic sports without the permission of the session.

It should be noted that the Olympic Charter was revised such that a specific sport can now be removed by the entire IOC membership if its governing body does not comply with an IOC executive board decision.

According to the IOC, "it operates in a manner that is likely to harm the name of the Olympic movement."

IOC President Thomas Bach, who presided over the executive board, also got new powers that allow him to suspend a sport or event discipline from the Olympics if the governing body fails to comply with a decision.
