Only 20% of Animals Species Discovered in Meghalaya So Far

Just 10,000 of the assessed 50,000 fauna species in Meghalaya have been found up until now, Chief Wildlife Warden H C Chaudhury has said.

He said the state Forest and Environment Department is considering making a more tenable GIS-based information base of fauna species as a team with the Zoological Survey of India (ZSI).

Head Chief Conservation of Forests B K Lyngwa praised the ZSI's endeavours in the logical exploration of fauna species.

The book contains refreshed data on faunal variety in the district.

A sum of 18,527 fauna species has been found in the Northeast, addressing around 18% of the complete known fauna of India, according to the book.

Meghalaya has 9,853 fauna species, Assam 9,607, Manipur 5,036, Nagaland 3,869, Tripura 3,605 and Mizoram 3,020. Of the 718 compromised fauna species in the country, 153 are in the district, it added.
